As a holistic practice, Design Studies intersects Arts and Entertainment, Politics, Sociology, Psychology, and Emerging Technologies, and beyond. This course invites students to transgress that malleable borderline that shapes design, opening the field of study to unexpected possibilities. Through a critical appraisal of existing systems, territories, bodies and objects it teaches designers to use an expanded understanding of the practice to drive progress and experimentation. Designers reimagine the digital and physical objects and systems that mediate our daily lives.
In this course, students will use a research-based approach to material studies by integrating design thinking strategies with other fields of study, with a focus on design as a tool for communication. During this process oriented course students will research, ideate, and prototype a series of conceptual, socially engaged projects that interrogate and integrate existing design practices and tactics throughout culture.
